Isayan Tabbed CCAA Runner of the Week

Comments

SAN RAMON, Calif. Vahagn Isayan of the Cal State San Marcos men's cross country team has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Runner of the Week for the week of Oct. 10-16, the conference announced Tuesday. Isayan, a junior from Tujunga, Calif., is the first-ever men's cross country team member to receive the CCAA's weekly award. It is the fourth time this season that a member of the men's or women's cross country team has been honored with the award. "It's wonderful that Vahagn received runner of the week, it's always very stiff competition with UC San Diego, Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona," said CSUSM head coach Steve Scott. "It's nice to finally see that he was able to receive the award. It's well deserved, he's been running very consistent all year long and has won several of races." Last Saturday, Isayan won the collegiate 8000m race at the 9th Annual Cougar Challenge, hosted by CSUSM at Mangrum Track. Isayan's time of 25:16 was his second-fastest of the year and guided the Cougars to their first team victory of the season. With Isayan's triumph, the Cougars collected 22 points to defeat runner-up Biola (NAIA No. 9) by 38 points. Isayan has won two races this season, including the Coyote Challenge, and has placed in the top five in four races. The men's and women's cross country teams close out the season on Saturday, Oct. 22 in the CCAA Conference Championships at Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park in Ontario, Calif.
